World Health Organization (WHO) is an international agency under the United Nations
(UN) assembly that is responsible for global international public health. The WHO states it 
aims to achieve universal health at the highest level for all people. In addition, the organization 
has a guiding vision and mission that directs its performance and delivery of services. 
According to the organization, its vision is that globally all people will have access to 
healthcare services from a skilled and competent healthcare provider across the healthcare 
sector. Besides, the mission is to advocate and mobilize global, and local resources to support 
health, attain millennium development goals (MDGs) (World Health Organization, 2022). 
Through the vision of the World Health Organization, it has promoted global health and
safety for all people through health promotion activities. This organization has achieved this by 
providing leadership in public health issues and partnering with other health agencies, 
governments, and local communities to improve health. Over the past years, the world health 
organization has worked hard to achieve global health for all people through partnership, and 
research. To give an illustration, the World Health Organization played a key role in 
eradicating smallpox which had become a disease of public health concern. In 1967, the 
organization launched a campaign to eradicate smallpox. The organization developed and 
implemented eradication strategies such as immunization, and surveillance measures 
worldwide. However, by 1980 the World Health Organization announced the complete 
eradication of smallpox. This is one of the major contributions the World Health Organization 
has made in the promotion of public health and safety (World Health Organization, 2022).
However, to support its mission and vision the World Health Organization gets support 
from various local, and global communities. The support comes in form of partnership, 
funding, or leadership in different public health concerns. For a long time, the United State of  America has been known as one of the main partners and supporters of WHO activities. The 
USA supports WHO by enhancing global health security, emergency programs, prevention, 
preparedness, and response in disasters. For instance, the United States of America supported 
the WHO with over S$ 945.6 million between 2016, and 2017. In addition, the Centre for 
Disease and Prevention (CDC) also supports WHO's vision and mission mainly through 
education, training, and research in public health matters. For example in 2018, CDC trained 79
funding, the gathering of vital data, the introduction of technology, and essential 
medications(United Nations, 2022).

The World Health Organization faces various challenges and barriers in the 
implementation of its vision and mission. These barriers include social, physical, economical, 
and political challenges in different regions. However, socioeconomic barriers have been 
termed as one of the challenges that have hugely impacted the activities of the organization. 
The poverty state in many parts of the world has led to an increase in incidences of chronic 
diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and HIV. This has increased the demand for healthcare 
services, and resources to cater for health coverage (Oleribe et al., 2019). 
Besides, health disparities are another barrier that has affected the organization's 
activities. For instance, the organization estimates that about one-third of the world population 
has no access to healthcare services. More so, physical barriers have also challenged the 
organization's activities significantly. To give an example, the World Health Organization 
started Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) to kick out polio in 1988. However, despite 
the efforts to eradicate the disease countries such as Pakistan and Afghanistan remain behind. 
This has been attached to barriers such as illiteracy, religious beliefs, war, poverty, and lack of 
healthcare services in these regions (Anushka et al., 2021). 
The provision of funds, policies, and other regulations have significant impacts on the 
World Health Organization's performance. Regulations and policies form the critical base for 
any functional system in healthcare. The World Health Organization has partnered with the 
Food Drug Administration (FDA) to strengthen regulations that are aimed at protecting public 
health. The collaboration has led to a high awareness in matters of public health, preparedness, 
and response to emergencies. On the other hand, sufficient funding from the partners has 
accelerated the achievements of the World Health Organization. For example, in 2018 during 
the Ebola outbreak in the Congo Republic, the United States supported the organization which 
saw vaccination of more than 30, 000 citizens, and provision of medical services (World Health
Organization, 2022).
Nevertheless, the potential effects of funding, policies, and legislation will promote the 
achievement of the World Health Organization's vision and mission. One of the objectives of 
WHO is to ensure universal quality healthcare for all. However, continued support will increase
health coverage. This is supported by the pilot study done in South Africa conducted by WHO 
in partnership with USAID on the implementation of the global strategy on integrated people-
centered health services. The results revealed that this model will improve healthcare services 
(World Health Organization, 2022).
Organization activities hold a wide range of impacts on the health needs of a 
community. The activities influence community health needs in both positive, and negative 
since the organization makes up a component of the social, economic, and physical 
environment of the community. Organization policies that support health are likely to lead to 
the adoption of health behaviors. On the other hand, if the organization's culture does not 
support health, it is likely to promote health risky behavior (De & Pool, 2017).
Nursing professionals constitute a large of healthcare providers that are necessary for 
the provision and promotion of health. It is estimated that nurses make up more than half of the 
world’s health workforce. However, nurses can be involved in World Health Organization 
matters through the provision of healthcare services. Given that nurses offer a wide range of 
services such as emergency care, their involvement is key to the attainment of global health 
coverage. Additionally, nurses can play a critical role in advocacy to mobilize resources from 
agencies, and government to support the activities of the organization (World Health 
Organization, 2020).
Besides, the nurses can be involved with the organization through the delivery of 
community care. Nurses make a great impact in the community through participation in 
community issues that promote health such as vaccinations, health education, and community 
diagnosis. More so, nurses can be involved through research that leads to improvements and promotion of health services. In addition, nurses can be leaders and managers of various 
organization programs. Nurses can provide effective leadership, management, and governance 
attributes to the organization (World Health Organization, 2020).
