Unearned privilege, institutionalized racism, microaggression, and unintended bias are related among themselves. They all attribute some type of prejudice towards certain part of the population or a specific individual. Being empathetic and culturally sensitive helps you to become aware of your own hidden bias and manage better if a situation arise. It is very easy to fall into a microaggression unintentionally and make yourself aware of your own biases will help you understand and work with the specific population or individual. As a counselor professional we can advocate to extinguish this microaggressions or at least diminish them. However is been years of oppression towards the specific populations that it will be a hard work to accomplish. It is not impossible and empathy is not enough. We need to continue to create more conscience and educate about “America” being a country of immigrants. Where every population is welcome. Educate that immigrants created and maintain this country and create awareness of human rights.

Unearned privilege, institutionalized racism, microaggression, and unintended bias seem to go hand in hand. They all appear to work together to keep racism alive and well. Many people are unaware of their unearned privilege. I was highly unaware of my white privilege for many years, as many people I knew. Many people are still unaware of their privilege which is very harmful because it keeps them in the dark about how they contribute to institutionalized racism. Cultural empathy is important so we can attempt to understand the worldview of others. We may not be able to fully understand someone’s experience, but we can open our minds enough to try to understand the best we can to assist in making necessary changes to end systematic racism. Empathy, in my opinion, is a start, and it is not sufficient to end unearned privilege, institutionalized racism, unintended bias, and microaggression. It is important to actively listen to those who have had a different experience from the majority and listen to solutions not just come up with our own that we see fit as we have over the years.

Counseling Diverse Populations Discussion Board Privilege, Unintended Bias, & Microagression A collection of authors and speakers, Sue & Sue (2019), Peggy McIntosh, Gundel et al. (2020), Sam Richards, and Yassmin Abdel-Magied, and Smith et al. (2020), have begun to inform us about concepts such as racism, social privilege, cultural perception, unintended bias, and cultural empathy. Through process journals, we have individually considered our thoughts, ideas, and emotional reactions to several of these concepts. Singularly, these concepts define different aspects and dynamics of marginalization and oppression. This singularity, however, may limit our understanding of how these concepts systematically operate in our lives, our society, and our culture. A systemic perspective may serve to not only broaden our view, but also reveal ways that cultural marginalization can be delimited and mitigated. A systemic perspective may allow us to better answer the question “Well, what can we do?” To prepare for this discussion read, review, and reflect on the text chapters and additional materials provided in Module 3. Consider how your worldview may have been challenged and/or informed regarding concepts such as social privilege, unintended bias, and cultural empathy. Then turn your attention to the following questions and formulate your main post: • • • What are the relationships, if any, between the concepts of unearned privilege, institutionalized racism, microaggression, and unintended bias? How do concepts of empathy, and specifically cultural empathy, serve to address the concepts discussed in the previous question? How do all of these concepts in concert inform the role of counselors as social justice advocates? Is empathy sufficient? In addition to your main post, you must post two responses to others in the class. Initial posts are due by the end of the day on the Thursday prior to the final deadline. Response posts are due by the final deadline as indicated for each forum. See the course calendar for more details. Late posts will receive zero points. Points will be deducted in the event that the posting guidelines are not met. A note about posting: Postings should provide personal reactions or responses to the questions or issues being posed. In order to fulfill this requirement, postings must be substantive and reflective. For example, posting a response such as “I agree” or “Good point” is fine, but is not substantive enough to fulfill the requirement of the discussion. Post #1 should provide the students response the question or issue being posed. Posts #2 and #3 should be a response to or an extension of an existing post. Responses to existing posts must be delivered in a professional manner and be respectful of differing views and opinions regarding the topic at hand. Within these parameters, these types of responses may affirm or refute the ideas being posited on the forum. In the spirit of scholarship within a community of learners, postings should extend and expand the thoughts and ideas present in the existing discourse. The discussion forum will be monitored and moderated by the instructor. Students are encouraged to remain engaged and involved in the discussion beyond the required three posts. file://dc01/users2/marap/COUNSELING%20DIVERSE%20POPULATIONS/Derald%20Wing% 20Sue,%20David%20Sue,%20Helen%20A.%20Neville,%20Laura%20Smith%20%20Counseling%20the%20Culturally%20Diverse_%20Theory%20and%20PracticeWiley%20(2019).pdf
