Clinical preventative interventions offer an excellent opportunity to save many lives and promote health and wellness. Some interventions that have been around for some time and are wildly successful in promoting health and wellness are different cancer screenings. There are many different cancer screenings and all have a specific test/imaging and a certain age frame that people are supposed to have them completed. For example, regular colorectal cancer screenings should begin at age 50. This is the most effective way to reduce a person’s risk of getting the disease, and if they do have it, screenings are a good way to catch it early. Even though this test has been shown to be effective, only 25% of adults age 50-65 are up to date on colorectal cancer screenings (ODPHP, 2021).

Breast cancer screening should start around the age of 40 and women should have a yearly mammogram. If everything has been normal, women over the age of 55 can begin to get their mammogram every two years. There are exceptions to these rules and those can include current symptoms or a family history of the diseases in which a person should begin screening much earlier than the normal population.

A study was done that tracked 1000 people with aggressive cancer.

  • When the patient received cancer screenings and the cancer was caught early, the 5 year survival rate was 80% (NCI, 2018).
  • When the patient did not receive cancer screenings at the appropriate age and cancer was later diagnosed due to symptoms, the 5 year survival rate was 40%.

Debbie post,

Technology has the potential to improve mental health well-being for individuals. Mobile devices have given healthcare workers new ways to connect with and interact with patients in a more meaningful and timely manner (National Institute of Mental Health [NIMH], 2019). For individuals with a known mental health condition, surveys or wellness checks can be sent out via text message or e-mail to ensure that mental wellness is still present and/or self-evaluation apps can be completed at any time by the individual to evaluate their status (NIMH, 2019). There are also interactive trainings available on apps to help individuals work on coping or thinking skills to improve their mental wellness (NIMH, 2019). The value of smartphone apps during pregnancy is a handy tool for the patient and the OB care provider. Many integrated tools, including electronic health record integration, provide confidential screenings and follow-up if necessary to resources (Ricketts et al., 2019). Technology has opened up many possibilities to supplement traditional healthcare. Integrating technology whenever possible will help patients take the initiative in their health and provide support and intervention before detrimental outcomes occur.
