Unit 5: Assignment

  • Group Decision-Making

One of the most bewildering findings of social psychology is that people working in groups often make worse decisions than people working individually. This finding is even more disturbing when we realize that the American legal system relies on the power of group decision-making (e.g., juries) for determining the guilt or innocence of people on trial. This unit, your task is to examine the influence of the group in jury deliberations. If you have served on a jury, you may use your own experience as a basis for the analysis; if you have not served on a jury:

Watch the video clip “Twelve Angry Men (Links to an external site.)
or

Read the 12 Angry Men (Links to an external site.) movie review.

Use this example as the basis of your analysis.

Reflecting on your jury experience (or the jury experience depicted in “Twelve Angry Men”), answer the following questions:

What social conditions influenced the decision-making process? Explain the impact of each.

  • Were the pressures for group harmony implicit or explicit?

How did groupthink influence the situation?

How is minority influence used to change majority opinion?

Is group decision-making more or less efficient than individual decision-making?

Is group decision-making more or less accurate than individual decision-making?

  • How can we change the social circumstances surrounding jury deliberations to reduce the influence of group dynamics?

This unit complete a personal reflection in your journal. Remember, your personal reflection does not need to be lengthy; you are only required to write one paragraph (although you are welcome to write more if you would like).

The journal should:

Relate the dynamics of the social theories, concepts, and processes we cover each unit to your life.

  • Use the principles to better understand a reaction you had to a particular situation or person, analyze the behavior of someone else, evaluate the dynamics of a situation, group or organization you interacted with, etc.

Remember your journal entry will only be seen by the instructor and will not be seen or shared with any other students.

Stereotypes

  1. Our society is impacted by both subtle and not so subtle stereotypes that affect how a person is viewed and evaluated by others.  It takes an emotional toll on the person being stereotyped and sadly sometimes that person takes on the stereotype and think about himself or herself through the lens of that stereotype.  It influences people’s daily lives, relationships, and career and life choices.  All of society suffers from the negative impact of these kinds of stereotypes and yet they continue.
  2. Some of the more common stereotypes are related to overt and covert forms of racism and sexism; weight; sexual orientation; “stay at home dads:” “stay at home moms;” blue collar workers; liberals; conservatives, etc.  There seems to be no end to the list.  People fail to get to know others who are different from them and impose an external framework to define who the person being stereotyped is, what their values and motivations are, etc.
  3. An important issue related to stereotypes is many who do not experience a particular stereotype question if it is occurring and tend to minimize its impact.  It’s very difficult for people to understand something they haven’t experienced.  This discussion will allow the opportunity to hear first-hand accounts of people who have experienced or observed a particular stereotype when it was occurring.
  4. For this discussion describe a stereotype you have either personally experienced or directly observed another person experiencing.  Identify 1). Your view of why it occurred; 2). How it affected you, whether you were the one experiencing it or observing it; and 3). What do you think you can do in your life, if anything, to somehow contribute to eliminating this type of behavior?
