Running head: A FAMILY HEALTH ASSESSMENT 1 A Family Health Assessment Conducting a family health assessment is a vital aspect of a holistic view that can help a nurse in determining where to focus (Girgin & Sivri, 2015). The chosen family for this family health assessment was a family friend who agreed to disclose their health issues. Due to the invasive nature of the questions, the names of the family members who participated in the interview will not be disclosed. It was a white family of four who lives in the same neighborhood with my family. The husband was 43 while the wife was 40 years old. Both are firstborns among their siblings. The couple had two children, a boy and a girl aged 11 and 8 years, respectively. The A FAMILY HEALTH ASSESSMENT 2 couples are both employed and belong to a lower-middle-class. They can neither be described as rich nor poor. The couple described themselves as Christians with strong values of Christianity. The wife and the daughter love church and participate in various church activities, while the husband and the son love fishing. Considering the health of this family, the husband and the firstborn are overweight, while the wife and the daughter are in perfect health with no other health condition. The husband was once diagnosed with high blood pressure and advised to lose weight because of the risks associated with it. He has been on prescription medication to manage his condition. The husband was also advised to reduce beer intake, but it seems he is experiencing challenges doing this. The children have been immunized and seem okay, but they neither go for routine checkups nor participate in sports physicals. The family consumes a balanced diet consisting of meat, fish, sausages, cheese, vegetables, and fruits. The wife loves to try different foods. The husband and wife have coffee in the morning and occasionally take wine. The children often take milk and juice. The family believes that everyone normally has an adequate sleep for an average of 8 hours per day. No one in the family struggles with constipation or diarrhea. None of the family members has either hearing or vision problems. None of them wear prescription glasses. The couple was amused when they were asked if they often have trouble remembering. They laughed and said, ‘who doesn’t forget.’ However, they did not feel that they had any neuro-deficiencies. When asked about their self-esteem, the husband admitted that he is fat but still loves himself. However, the son has been having trouble with his self-esteem because of his weight and image. His peers call him names that he doesn’t like. This brings concerns about his mental health. The couples were not shy about sharing their sexuality. They stated that they were both sexually active and that sex rekindles their relationship and brings them together. 3 A FAMILY HEALTH ASSESSMENT Functional Health Pattern Strengths The assessment of the family revealed certain functional health pattern strengths that were noted in the findings. Among these areas include role relationships and coping. Both the couple work to provide for their family. They support each other in almost everything, and this has created a healthy and cooperative environment for everyone. It has created an environment that has allowed the husband to admit that he is overweight and unhealthy. He knows that he needs help. The couples both feel that they are breadwinners with equal responsibility in making decisions relating to discipline. It implies that couples are equally responsible for the well-being and health of the family. When it comes to coping, the family maintains active communication. They engage in family discussions in case of anything pressing matter from any member of the family. This is a healthy coping mechanism instead of resorting to drugs or alcohol as a way of coping with stress. Areas with Barriers to Health The areas where barriers to health were identified include health perception, physical exercise, and self-perception. When it comes to health perception, the husband is overweight and has been having trouble quitting beer. In the area of physical exercise, the family does not lead a physically active life, and this is a barrier to health. When it comes to self-perception, everyone feels good about themselves except the firstborn, who is also overweight. He is called names by his peers, and this presents a barrier to his mental health. Family Systems Theory 4 A FAMILY HEALTH ASSESSMENT The concept of family systems theory looks at families as cohesive emotional units whose members are emotionally connected (Rolland & Walsh, 2018). The model consists of various elements, but the one that applies in the case of the above couple is the sibling position. Since both are firstborns among their siblings, this theory suggests that they are more likely to battle over who is in charge. The associated personality traits of the same sibling position may affect the family relationship because there is a higher likelihood of butting heads over responsibilities (Erdem & Safi, 2018). To address this, the family may seek family system therapy, where the family members work together to understand why and how their behaviors may affect other family members.
