Outbreak Protocol Outbreak! – A Lesson in Epidemiology Introduction: Epidemiology is the study of the occurrence, determinants, distribution, and control of health and disease in a population. People who study epidemiology are “disease detectives”. They try to determine the factors that allow a disease to develop in a given population and they develop methods to prevent disease. In the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), is the agency that is in charge of developing and carrying out disease prevention and control. Its worldwide counterpart is the World Health Organization (WHO). In this laboratory exercise you will play the role of epidemiologist to determine who started the influenza and COVID-19 epidemics in the population of this class. This is of course a simulation. You will not be working with the organisms that cause either of these diseases. must analyze the data, BEFORE YOU BEGIN READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS! Procedure: 1. Obtain a tube of broth and make note of the number on the tube. a. This tube represents your own personal “fluid” b. You will be engaged in Simulated Exchange of Fluids (SEF) c. Make sure to practice safe SEF by wearing a lab coat and gloves because the fluids contain bacteria. You will be working with E. coli (white) and Serratia marcescens(red) d. At the start, one person has influenza (flu) = E. coli (white) and one person has COVID-19 = S. marcescens (red) 2. Everyone must engage in SEF 3 times 3. DO NOT engage in SEF until the instructor says it is time to do so 4. During rounds #1, #2, and #3 never have SEF with the same person more than once. Round # 1 A. When the instructor says to engage in SEF #1, you must pair up with someone from another table (if possible). One of you must have a pipette dialed to 5 ml and a large tip attached. B. The person with the pipette must transfer 5 ml of his/her fluids into the tube of the other person. C. The recipient must cap and vortex the tube, then use the pipette to transfer 5 ml back to the original person. You must now vortex this tube. Once the board is complete, copy all the results (or take a cell phone picture) 4. Place 20 ul of your fluid at the top of a TSA plate. 5. Triple streak the liquid onto your plate 6. Place the plate at 25°C because Serratia is red at 25°C but will not turn red at 37°C 7.
